DJ Tico B
"DJ Tico B" has over 4 decades of broadcasting, television and music experience. Influenced by the sounds of Motown, Disco, and British rock of the day, he was a professional rock drummer for 8 years, but decided to hit the decks in 1974. Tico B became resident DJ for 2 years at the famous Las Vegas Nite Club, before moving on to such night clubs as, The Persian Room, and Whisky A-Go-Go.
Although too many names to mention, his major influences and favourite DJ/Producers include; Frankie Knuckles, Joey Negro, Jamie Ward, DJ Meme, David Morales, Roger Sanchez, Oliver Koletski, Prok & Fitch, Discotron, BT Express, Barry White, Salsoul Nugget, Bob Sinclar and many, many others.
Born Ken Baker, in Auckland, New Zealand, he was nick-named “Tico B” in 1998 by his radio school tutor while attending an "On Air" presenters course at Hott FM Studio’s - Cavill Mall, Surfers Paradise. Since then, Tico B has stayed with him.
Tico B went on to host a variety of shows on Hot FM before taking over the “The Big Drive Home” for 4 years, and appearing twice weekly at the famous long running, Bourbon Bar - The same site as "Retro’s Cocktail Lounge" (Gold Coast) resides today.
In 1999 Tico B founded “Tico B Entertainment” a professional mobile DJ agency specialising in DJ’s for weddings, corporate functions and special events. DJ’s for all occasions, from Old School R&B to House music, and DJ’s who specialise in party classics from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000's and current Top 40 dance.
Tico B has been resident DJ at The Clock Hotel, Broadbeach Tavern - Liars Bar, the Bourbon Bar, Whisky, Persian Room, Las Vegas Night Club, The Balcony Nite Club, Mansion Nite Club to name a few and, has played privately for 2Day FM, Terry White Chemists, and Chic Events.
With the demand of old school r&b and hip-hop and the surge for old school retro, disco and classic house back on the scene who else better could you call on with real life experience and a pure understanding of the decades? This of course has opened many new doors for bars, clubs and restaurants to bring back the classics.
As a result, Tico B sets include original past hits, remixes, old school slow jams and soulful, funky disco house music like it used to be.
